Course Description: Retzius-sparing prostatectomy was first described in 2010 and has been adopted at 30 centers and by approximately 11% of surgeons internationally, according to recent surveys. However, a learning curve of 100 cases has been described. Our goal is to review the anatomical principles, evidence, technical considerations and patient management considerations with this novel surgical approach. Didactics will include a step-by-step description with illustrated figures and videos, expert tips and tricks, and management of complications.

Learning Objectives:

Identify pelvic anatomy and the anatomical basis of Retzius-sparing prostatectomy.
Identify key steps involved in the Retzius-sparing prostatectomy.
Discuss literature relating to outcomes of Retzius-sparing prostatectomy.
Incorporate Retzius-sparing prostatectomy into practice for appropriate patients and in the safest conditions.
Explain how to perform Retzius-sparing prostatectomy, even in difficult circumstances such as enlarged prostates and median lobes.
Identify alternatives to Retzius-sparing prostatectomy that similarly preserve the male urinary continence mechanism, such as the Tewari hood technique.
