Karin Hardiman, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She was recruited from the University of Michigan in 2019 where she was in academic practice for 8 years. Dr. Hardiman’s practices at the Birmingham VA and the University Hospital. Her clinical interests are in colorectal cancer, anal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease and anorectal disease. She utilizes minimally invasive surgery where possible. Dr. Hardiman’s primary research interests are in improving the treatment of colon and rectal cancer via basic and translational research. She has an NIH funded laboratory studying the role of intra-tumor genetic heterogeneity and specific proteins in colorectal cancer metastasis and response to therapy. She also investigates the importance of multidisciplinary cancer care and survivorship care. In addition to her research, she is the Associate Director for Quality in the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center at UAB and works with the cancer management teams to improve the quality of cancer treatment.
