Sawra Maurer is a physician associate with passion for patient centered care and empowering her patients thru education. She recently joined the Colorectal Surgery outpatient APP practice at Mayo Clinic Rochester where she hopes to continue her passion for caring for patients with colorectal cancer as well expand her expertise to patients with other complicated colorectal issues. Sawra started her career as a PA in 2007 when she took a job as a surgical hospitalist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. During this time, she realized her true passion for gastroenterology and oncology. Therefore in 2011 she decided to transition to the department of gastroenterology where she developed her expertise in the evaluation and management of colorectal cancer, colorectal cancer screening, complex polyp management and hereditary cancer syndromes such as FAP and Lynch syndrome. In January of 2022 Sawra decided to make a significant career change and took a job at Exact Sciences in their medical affairs department. She was responsible for developing a strategy on how the company could better interact and engage with PAs and NPs to increase colorectal cancer screening rates at a national level. She found this position to be professionally rewarding, but ultimately determined that she missed working in a clinical setting. Sawra obtained her undergraduate degree from St. Olaf College in Minnesota and her master’s degree is PA studies from the University of Wisconsin La Crosse Mayo Clinic program. During her time at Mayo Clinic Sawra gave many CME presentations and was a preceptor for many PA and NP students. She was also a guest instructor for the Mayo Clinic physician assistant program. Sawra continues to reside in Rochester, Minnesota where she lives with her husband and three energetic children. She does her best to maintain an active lifestyle thru cycling (indoors and outdoors), strength training, running and yoga.
