Dr. Stefan Holubar was born and raised on Long Island. Stefan is a first generation American as his mother Mariana immigrated to New York from Stockholm Sweden, and his father Joel’s family was Ukrainian; Stefan speaks Swedish and German. Under the mentorship of Neil Hyman MD, he received my MD from University of Vermont in 2002 after overcoming stage 3 colon cancer related to long-standing chronic ulcerative colitis treated with a modified 2-stage IPAA. Stefan’s wife, Susanne – affluent in French, is also a first generation German-American. After medical school, Stefan completed a General Surgery Residency at North Shore-LIJ in 2007, and then completed a 2-year Masters in Clinical & Translational Research, and a clinical Colorectal Fellowship at Mayo Clinic Rochester, 2007 – 2010. After Mayo, he joined Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in 2010, and in 2015 was appointed Chief of the Division of Colon & Rectal Surgery. In April 2017, he was appointed Vice-President of the American Society of Enhanced Recovery. Given his long-standing interest in Surgery for IBD, in Aug. 2017 Dr. Holubar accepted a position as a Staff Surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Ohio. Presently within the Department of Colon & Rectal Surgery he serves as the IBD Surgery Section Chief, the Director of Research, and as the NSQIP Surgeon Champion for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. On a national level, Dr. Holubar is actively engaged in helping lead the NSQIP IBD Collaborative, serves as Vice-Chair for the ASCRS IBD Committee, Co-Chair for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s Professional Education Committee. To date he has published >100 peer-reviewed articles, more than half of which are on IBD, a dozen book chapters, & 1 book (coeditor). His main clinical and research focus is IBD, with a special interest in all any Med-Surg pouch (IPAA) topics/issues, complex Crohn’s & Colitis, venous thromboembolism prophylaxis in IBD and recently received a grant from the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation to examine the role of aspirin in VTE prophylaxis. Finally, Dr. Holubar is the PI for the newly funded Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s surgical cohort and collaborative, IBD-SIRCQ (Surgical Innovation, Research, & Quality Collaborative).
