Dr. Mizell obtained his medical degree and completed a general surgery residency at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. He then went on to complete a fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas in colon and rectal surgery. He is currently a Professor of surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences where he has a busy colorectal surgery practice. Outside of the clinical area, he focuses on education and curriculum development. He was the director of the junior/senior surgery clerkships at UAMS for 10 years, but now is Program Director for the Transitional Year Program. In 2010 he created the Business of Medicine course to address the deficit in personal and business financial education for physicians. The curriculum has been highlighted on multiple podcasts and blogs, and has been adapted for use at other universities throughout the US as well. The course is the first of its kind in US medical schools, and as a result of his efforts Dr. Mizell was awarded the White Coat Investor Financial Educator of the Year in 2020. He has published multiple papers related to physician financial education and has spoken throughout the US to physicians on the Business of Medicine. He has been married to his wonderful wife Jolie for 21 years, and they have 3 children - Kathryn (17), Gavin (16), and Asher (10).
