Dr. Wexner is Director of the Ellen Leifer Shulman and Steven Shulman Digestive Disease Center and Chairman of the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida. He was the vice chair of the Board of Regents of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), and is the Chair of the ACS Commission on Cancer (CoC) National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer, and member of the CoC executive committee. Dr. Wexner is Past President of: the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), ASCRS Research Foundation, American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery, and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, as well as the Florida Gastroenterologic Society, and the South Florida Chapter of the ACS. Dr. Wexner is an Editor-in-Chief of Surgery, an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) in Ireland, Glasgow, and England and a fellow of the RCS of England and of Edinburgh. He is an honorary member or fellow of the ACGGBI, ESCP, CSSANZ, EAES, the European Surgical Association, and over 20 other national and international societies. Dr. Wexner is a member of the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators.
Dr. Wexner holds professor-level appointments at Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, University of South Florida, the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University, University College London, and Imperial College London. He is an honorary professor at over 10 other universities around the world, and received an honorary PhD degree from the University of Belgrade.
Dr. Wexner has published over 800 peer reviewed manuscripts which have been cited more than 38,000 times. He has also published over 270 textbook chapters, and 150 editorials and/or invited commentaries. He is the editor or co-editor of 39 textbooks or freestanding volumes to date. Dr. Wexner has held over 70 visiting professorships and delivered over 2,170 scientific lectures. Dr. Wexner has an H-index of 98 and in 2021 was listed by Elsevier as amongst the top 2% of the most cited scientists of all time in 198 scientific fields and subfields. He ranked 34th amongst all cited surgeons of all time with an H index of 82 and is currently the most cited living colorectal surgeon.
