Harry Ellicott Bacon was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Proctology at Temple University Hospital. He was an internationally renowned surgeon and was instrumental in the establishment of our flagship journal, Diseases of the Colon and Rectum. He served as President of both the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery and was the founder of the International Society of University Colon and Rectal Surgeons. Dr. Bacon was a prolific researcher, educator of over 100 residents, and surgical innovator, especially with regard to procedures to treat cancer of the rectum and inflammatory bowel disease.
