The opioid overdose crisis presents special challenges to our understanding of addiction as brain disease. A durable solution requires an artful combination of medical intervention, psychological support and optimized social services. As an ASAM member Dr. P is honored to present at the Society’s 54th Annual Conference in the nation’s capital. He is inspired by the opportunity to respond to OUD with a truly multidisciplinary and international plan of action. He believes that the medical profession, engineers, and society at large need to respond to OUD in earnest, much as we responded to HIV/AIDS and acute stroke in previous decades.
