Maria Macedo-Rea, DNP, MPH, RN, CIC, CPHQ has over 15 years experience in Infection Prevention and over 11 years experience an Infection Prevention leader, currently serving as the Division Director of Infection Prevention at HCA West Florida Division. Her experience includes healthcare quality and process improvement, acute care, long-term care, ambulatory care, rehabilitation, and behavioral health.
Maria has implemented a variety of best practices to reduce HAIs including establishing an effective IP program in a newly opened hospital; under her leadership, this facility earned and sustained “Best Infection Prevention Program” award for the division, consisting of 14 hospitals. Additionally, she has implemented a robust hand hygiene program and led an organization to meet The Leapfrog Group’s stringent hand hygiene requirements, meeting all domains in the Leapfrog Group survey, contributing to the facility maintaining their “A” Grade. Maria has served as an Infection Prevention consultant to long-term acute care and skilled nursing facilities.
Maria is committed to the advancement of Infection Prevention, having been an active member of the Association for Professional in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) Bay Area Chapter (BAPIC) since 2009 as well as an active member of the Florida Professionals in Infection Control (FPIC). Currently, Maria services on the Conference Committee for both BAPIC and FPIC and is the Education Committee Board of Director for BAPIC.
Maria received her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree as well as her Master’s in Public Health (MPH) degree from the University of South Florida, and received her Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from the University of Central Florida. She has been certified in Infection Control (CIC) since 2012, and certified in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) since 2014.
In her free time, Maria enjoys traveling and spending time with her family and is an ardent hockey fan. GO Bolts!
