Session Description: Addressing health inequities requires new risk assessment approaches for healthcare associated infections. In this presentation we discuss the use of the CDC’s Social Vulnerability Index (SVI) to identify non-traditional risk factors for surgical site infection (SSI). Data on Medicare beneficiaries in four states were used to identify risks for SSI following cardiac bypass (CABG) surgery. Our findings suggest that residing in a community with high percentages of minorities or non-English speakers is a risk factor for CABG SSI. The SVI and other assessments of social determinants of health can help identify non-traditional factors which may impact SSI risk.
