Interest in automated hand hygiene monitoring systems (AHHMS) to estimate hand hygiene rates and guide improvement efforts has slowly increased over the last decade. More hospitals are exploring AHHMS in response to Leapfrog standards and the requisite human resources. Further, the newly released Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America Compendium stresses the importance of using multiple methods to measure hand hygiene adherence. While many infection preventionists (IPs) recognize the value of AHHMS, they struggle with making the business case for the financial investment and lack guidance for implementation. 
During this interactive breakfast symposium, you will learn how IPs at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center & Children’s Hospital of New Jersey collaborated with the C-suite to elevate hand hygiene as a priority in their journey toward High Reliability by implementing an AHHMS in all inpatient units.  Denise Shepherd, Chief Nursing Officer, will discuss the driving factors that led senior leadership to heavily invest in hand hygiene and the ongoing journey from leadership’s lens.
Doreen Dutchak, Associate Vice President and Safety Officer, will share struggles and successes along the way, including guiding everyone through the difficulty of accepting a much lower compliance rate as measured by AHHMS and driving momentum around the project, even after a difficult pandemic journey.
