Session Description: This presentation will provide an overview of Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR), a new Health Level Seven (HL7) standard for healthcare data exchange. We will discuss the implications of FHIR for automating healthcare-associated infection (HAI) and other patient safety data reporting through CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) in the context of two use cases with implications for infection control professionals--a newly proposed NHSN measure for Clostridioides difficile (CDI) infections and a healthcare-onset bacteremia/fungemia (HOB) measure.

Learning Objectives:

Identify the role of FHIR in automating healthcare data exchange for public health surveillance.
Identify the definitions and scope of data elements for the new NHSN HAI definitions for HT-CDI and HOB.
Describe the implications of FHIR on new NHSN HAI definitions (CDI and HOB).
