Dr. Janis Gonzales is the Bureau Chief and Medical Director for the Family Health Bureau in the Department of Health. She is also the Title V Director for New Mexico, the Vice President of the NM Perinatal Collaborative, and the President of the NM Pediatric Society. She is board certified in Pediatrics and has a Master’s Degree in Public Health, and is an Assistant Professor at the University of NM. Before coming to work for the Department of Health she worked for the University of New Mexico Center for Development and Disability, Early Childhood Evaluation Program (ECEP), providing developmental evaluations for children birth to three; and prior to that she spent nine years in private practice at Santa Fe Pediatrics in Santa Fe, NM. She received the "Unsung Hero" award from the American Academy of Pediatrics Council on Early Childhood in 2017 and has served as the Early Childhood Champion for the NM Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics for the past ten years. In 2019 she was appointed to the University of Texas Austin Prenatal to Three Policy Center Advisory Board. She is the mother of three children including a daughter with special needs. She wrote a book about her daughter, "Lessons from a Gentle Life: Reflections on Love, Loss, and Healing" which was published in 2019.
