Essence Hairston is a Clinical Instructor and Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist at UNC-Chapel Hill Department of ObGyn. She serves as the Outpatient Program Manager and Director of Community Engagement and Integrated Treatment Services and Co-Chair of the DEI Taskforce at UNC Horizons-Wake and the DEI Subcommittee for the Strategic Planning Committee for the Department of ObGyn at UNC Chapel Hill. She is focused on the intersectionality of perinatal and maternal substance use and mood disorders, adverse childhood experiences, reproductive justice, and integrative health care models that include a reproductive and social justice lens. She leads the statewide post-release SUD initiative for pregnant and parenting women with a SUD transitioning out of carceral settings in North Carolina at Horizons, in which she provides clinical and administrative supervision for substance use providers that provide behavioral health services at carceral settings.
