Families with children with special health care needs and disabilities face health inequities in their journey. What happens when you have other factors that might impact inequity, such as being African American in a overwhelming White system? How does a system that is hierarchical, academic, and slow to change, adapt to the reality of actually reaching ALL families? We would like share our starts, our stops, our learning, our relearning, and more to tell our ongoing story of collaboration. We have tried strategies that have worked and other that have not worked so well. But what we hope you hear is the honest communication and trust that we working to establish. A regional center with a lived experience dad, a local lived experience (in different ways) mom, and a mom and state leader with lived experience (also in different ways), are trying to figure out how to identify and prevent health inequities in African American families who have CYSHCN.
