While it is increasingly important that MCH programs, policies, and services be based in evidence, what has typically been accepted as “evidence” in the field is rooted in extractive practices that have historically failed to center and value the communities most impacted by MCH work - particularly Black, Indigenous, and people of color. In this session, we will unpack the origins of “evidence” in MCH and reflect on the hierarchy of evidence that guides MCH work. We will offer a reframed interpretation of this hierarchy that is grounded in community-defined evidence (CDE) and will share examples of CDE generation and use in practice from the mental health field. Participants will reflect on the hierarchy of evidence that informs their work and will consider how to begin prioritizing CDE.
