Retrospective Analysis of the Virginia Maternal Mortality Review Team’s Recommendations from Previous Reports

Maternal Mortality Review teams (MMRT) have been in existence for several years and through the efforts of CDC and the focus on improving maternal health outcomes--thus reducing maternal mortality and morbidity; programs and states have relied on the information and data gleamed from MMRT. Most MMRT develop reports which include recommendations based on the reviews of the cases. There is significant research and literature about the implementation of the recommendations, but little to no research/literature about what recommendations weren't implemented and why weren't they implemented, or barriers/challenges that were identified with implementation. Virginia is conducing a retrospective analysis on over 20 years worth of maternal mortality review team report recommendations, to understand which ones were recommended and why, what barriers or challenges were identified and what lessons were learned. Pulling all of this together to learn how to develop stronger recommendations to have the best impact for key populations, communities and policy makers to improve maternal health outcomes.
