Arizona’s Innovative Surveillance Response to an Infant Formula Shortage

Poster Presentation: The Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) began its response to the infant formula shortage in May 2022. ADHS began routinely monitoring several data sources, including: Arizona Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), formula availability and grocery store data, Arizona hotlines, Syndromic Surveillance, and reports of localized hardships. ADHS supported Arizona families in need by assisting with finding available formulas and protecting those at-risk for negative outcomes. In future responses, ADHS should prioritize the identification of other internal and external data sources to capture all families impacted by the shortage.
