Dr. Petersen is a physician trained in both internal medicine and preventive medicine. He has more than 20 years of experience working on bacterial and viral vector-borne diseases. He led CDC’s response to West Nile virus after its introduction into the United States in 1999 and in 2016 was the Incident Manager of the CDC’s Zika Response. Dr. Petersen has served as the director of the CDC’s Division of Vector-Borne Diseases since 2004. He is a fellow of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and is a past president of the Society of Vector Ecology. He has published more than 180 articles and book chapters.
