Dr. Brelsfoard is an assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Texas Tech University. He received his Ph.D. degree in entomology from the University of Kentucky with an emphasis on mosquito ecology and control and an M.S. degree from Eastern Illinois University in Biology with an emphasis on mosquito genetics. As the senior research scientist at MosquitoMate, Inc. he gained experience working in industry and with mosquito abatement districts while developing testing novel mosquito control approaches. His current research interests lie in the broad areas of mosquito, biting midge, and tick biology and ecology, symbiosis, and novel mosquito control methodology. Specifically, he currently works with Wolbachia bacteria, which can be used to reduce mosquito population as well as limit pathogen transmission. His future interests are to expand this technology to other insect vector systems such as biting midges to reduce the burden of zoonotic disease transmission.
