As a young man, Marcus Alexznader Baber-Newton grew up in poverty until he turned seventeen and enlisted in the military. He served in the United States Army for six years as a generator equipment repair technician, which took its toll as an incredibly physically demanding job. After serving in the military, he continued learning new trades in diesel mechanics, plumbing, roofing, construction, and agriculture. While working in greenhouses and gardens, Marcus found his true passion and is currently pursuing a degree in horticulture at Amarillo College.
Working and studying horticulture has allowed Marcus to combine both an education and a beloved hobby, and he continues to explore new areas of interest, including studies in fungi and urban agriculture. After receiving his Associate degree in horticulture, he plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree and develop his skills in mycology, genetics, and biotechnology. Through his hard work and the knowledge that he has gained, Marcus hopes to further benefit the world of horticulture and plant genetics and lives by the philosophy that Science isn’t about dollar signs, it is about discovery.
