Between September 2017 and September 2018, the Jackson County Detention Center in Kansas City, Missouri experienced three in-custody suicides. This class will discuss what is known about the factors leading up to the death of these individuals and how the Detention Center modified inmate management strategies to respond. This class will go beyond indicators and clinical risk factors into the environmental dynamics that can affect the outcome for inmates who see no hope or future in their situations.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion, participant will be able to identify protective factors that reduce the risk of suicide for incarcerated persons.
Upon completion, participant will be able to identify environmental stressors that contribute to suicide risk for incarcerated persons.
Upon completion, participant will be able to identify strategies to respond to environmental stressors for incarcerated persons.
Upon completion, participants will be able to identify how in-custody suicides can impact staff retention.
Upon completion, participants will be able to identify strategies to reduce the impact of in-custody deaths for officers.
