Erik was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and raised in Hammond, Wisconsin. He attended Luther College in Decorah, Iowa and graduated in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Communications & Linguistics. He then attended Hamline University School of Law (now Mitchell-Hamline School of Law) in St. Paul, Minnesota and graduated in December 2006. During law school, Erik externed with the Hennepin County District Court in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He also attended the University of Rome - La Sapienza through the Dispute Resolution Institute studying mediation, arbitration, and other forms of dispute resolution in the context of international business.
Erik began his law career as Operations Legal Counsel with Menard, Inc. He later joined a small, well-regarded law firm in Decorah, Iowa where he later became a managing partner. His practice focused on family law, estate planning, criminal defense, and general civil litigation. He joined the Nebraska Attorney General's Office in 2021 where he defends the State of Nebraska, state agencies, and state employees in a variety of contexts including claims made under 42 U.S.C. ยง 1983, the State Tort Claims Act, and the State Contract Claims Act. Erik also serves as counsel for the Nebraska Department of Banking and Finance providing civil enforcement under the Securities Act of Nebraska. Erik is licensed to practice in Nebraska, Iowa, U.S. District Courts for Nebraska and Iowa, and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Erik lives in Lincoln with his wife and young son. He enjoys fishing, hunting, mountain biking, and spending time with his family. Being raised in Wisconsin, he is an avid fan of the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers, Milwaukee Bucks, and University of Wisconsin.
