Nathan Lowe, Ph.D., is a Senior Research Associate of Child Welfare and Justice Research at Westat. He spent over 11 years at the American Probation and Parole Association, most recently as the Program Director of Grants and Research projects. As a former practitioner working in the adult and juvenile justice systems, Nathan’s areas of interest primarily concentrate on efforts to improve practices and policies to create a fairer and more transparent system that reduces crime and enriches the lives of the people who become involved with it. In addition, his interests relate to courts and corrections, organizational culture, social inequalities, and violence and victimization issues. Nathan has extensive experience in conducting research with populations involved with the justice system using mixed-mode methodologies and various statistical techniques. Notably, he helped developed the Impaired Driving Assessment, a screening tool to identify risk and needs for individuals convicted of an impaired-driving offense. His work has been published in a variety of formats, including scholarly peer-reviewed journals, professional journals, and technical reports. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Kentucky.
