Abeda Khanam has been a high school science teacher for over 25 years in the New York public school system. Her unwavering commitment to her students has earned her the title of Hometown Hero in 2015. Along with her teaching duties, Abeda is also a chaplain in the greater Jamaica, NY area and provides family and marital counseling services.
Abeda's passion for social justice is evident in her work outside of the classroom as well. She is the founder of Abeda Cares Inc., an organization that focuses on community wellness by tackling issues such as domestic violence, mental health resilience, and community well-being. Through this organization, Abeda teaches Adult, Teen, and Youth Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) and created additional multiple curricula that aim to promote mental well-being.
In addition to her work in the community, Abeda also teaches mental health promotion classes for city jail staff and incarcerated individuals. She believes that everyone deserves access to mental health resources and strives to make a positive impact on the lives of those around her. Abeda is a true inspiration and a shining example of the good that can come from dedicating oneself to the betterment of others.
