A response to the current opioid crisis must be a multilateral response in order to have any hope of mitigating its impact. In 2021 the Massachusetts Department of Health and Human services reported 2,290 opioid related deaths, 185 more deaths than 2020. It is the opinion of the Essex County Sheriff’s Department that corrections must be an active participant in this response. It is our hope that within this presentation audience members are provided with a practical correctional response to this crisis. A concise description and framework for developing an effective correctional based opioid treatment program will be a primary objective. Presentation will be delivered by medication assisted treatment practitioners with specific application within a correctional context.

Learning Objectives:

Gain an understanding of the evolution of medication assisted treatment within a correctional framework. Creating a transparent examination will provide participants with the complicated path towards adoption.
Gain an appreciation for the need to be their own architect and required methodology in finding a program that works for both their agency and population.
Gain details involving the application and operations of a licensed opioid treatment program. Obtain understanding of the complex relationships of partnering regulatory agencies, respective standards, oversight and security standards.
How to identify and access appropriate discharge planning designed for supportive success for participants to re-enter the community.
Learn how to navigate the Correctional Culture, perception of MAT treatment and maintain the highest level of security.
