Session: UNO--Restrictive Housing and Costly Litigation vs. the Humane Management of Complex Correctional Clients
In this session, participants will learn that solitary confinement by any other name is still solitary confinement. We will explore today’s jail population, why solitary confinement and restrictive housing language is important, and discuss the role of operational practices and purposeful facility design to better support the management of complex clients. Changes made in Yukon, Canada will be used as an example of how one jurisdiction amended solitary confinement legislation, regulations, policies, and operational practices to improve staff safety and client outcomes.
