Dr. Melissa Ing is an oral health educator, author, consultant, and current Chair, ADEA Section of Operative Dentistry and Biomaterials. Previously, Dr. Ing held academic positions at both University of Connecticut and at Tufts for a combined 30 years. She was the Director of Pre-Doctoral Clinics and Team Leader at UConn. At Tufts Dr. Ing designed and delivered courses in cariology, dental materials, standardized case notes, fluoride, and ergonomics. As principal investigator of over 18 projects, she conducted research in the areas of celiac disease, infection control, educational research, cariology, public health, and dental materials.
Dr. Ing brings celiac disease awareness to oral health providers and encourages the dental team to make significant contributions towards the mouth-body connection. She presents nationally and internationally on celiac disease and oral implications. She has been featured on “A Canadian Celiac Podcast”, has been interviewed by “OASIS/The Canadian Dental Association” for her celiac disease research, cariology calibration initiative, and for STEM education advocacy. Dr. Ing has authored 3 textbook chapters, multiple abstracts, and manuscripts, including celiac publications. She is currently working on a celiac resource and cookbook.
She is the recipient of the 2015 national Colgate-Palmolive/ADEA Excellence in Teaching Award, the recipient of several UConn Kaiser-Permanente teaching awards, Tufts accolades, and national nominations. In 2020, Dr. Ing was honored with a Trailblazer Community Award from Million Women Mentors/STEM Connector for her STEM work with children.
