Ethics is the foundation of professionalism and the trust granted to all healthcare professionals by the public. Therefore, the 2023 ADEA SDLP explores the ethical dilemmas that arise as a result of cultural values, beliefs, social norms, concepts, principles, rights, and assumptions that influence the treatment, research, and other decisions made by oral health and other health care professionals in their care of patients, families, and society. We will discuss how healthcare professionals overcome and identify their own cultural assumptions, biases, and values that may interfere with their ability to act objectively.
Learning Objectives:
Explain the differences among the concepts of ethics, professionalism and justice.
Describe how sociocultural factors, media and biases can influence ethical decisions in oral healthcare professionals and analyze any ethical health care dilemmas that they have observed in the media.
Apply a four-box ethical decision-making framework to address ethical concerns arising in clinical care and oral health team leadership.
