The ADA/ FDA created a guideline to provide dentists with a strategy for ordering radiographic examinations for patients seeking care, while at the same time minimizing radiation exposure. However, now a days there are multiple dental clinics/schools where this guideline is not followed.Consequently, we encounter cases of patient’s overexposure and unjustified or even incorrect ordering of radiographs (conventional or CBCTs) without proper previous clinical evaluation to accurately determine the appropriate type and time frame between radiographs. The audience will be calibrated in regard to when and what type of radiograph is appropriate to order on an individual patient basis.
Learning Objectives:
List the ADA/FDA selection criteria for radiographic examination.
Discuss indications and limitations of different types of radiographs.
