Recently, the American Dental Association (ADA) recognized three new dental specialties: Oral Medicine, Orofacial Pain, and Dental Anesthesiology. It is believed that ADA recognition would increase the visibility and demand for trained specialists, specialty clinical services, and graduate training programs. This seminar will present the status of these disciplines in dental school curricula across the US. In addition, data from this seminar is intended to help strategize curriculum development and evaluate future training program opportunities to support an integrative and multidisciplinary approach to academia and patient care. This presentation aims to make the new ADA-recognized dental specialties more than POSSIBLE.
Learning Objectives:
Summarize current approaches in the teaching of Oral Medicine, Orofacial Pain, and Dental Anesthesiology in dental curricula.
Compare models of teaching Oral Medicine, Orofacial Pain, and Dental Anesthesiology with students’ surveys to assess knowledge and confidence in applying the principles of these disciplines in clinical practice.
Propose and implement changes to integrate and standardize Oral Medicine, Orofacial Pain, and Dental Anesthesiology content into the dental curricula.
