This 45-minute small group discussion will promote the role of dentistry in the prevention of opioid drug misuse and abuse through the discussion of current opioid education programs at dental schools. The session will review the 2018 ADA policy on opioid prescribing, CODA Standard 2-24e, and novel online opioid education programs for medical and dental practitioners. The session will empower participants to advocate for and implement a standardized opioid education program at dental schools to instruct and inform dental practitioners on best practices regarding the prescription of opioids for oral and dental pain management.

List the components of the 2018 ADA policy on opioid prescribing and CODA Standard 2-24e.
Describe the features of opioid education programs at outside dental schools and demonstrate how other programs adhere to CODA Standard 2-24e.
Explain how interactive, online opioid education modules can be used to standardize and supplement existing dental opioid education programs.
