Faculty from historically underrepresented racial and ethnic (HURE) backgrounds are still considerably underrepresented in dental instituitions in the United States. The first presentation describes the status quo of dental faculty from HURM backgrounds. Presentation 2 discusses the progress with increasing the numbers of female dental students, faculty and administrators and the lessons learned for HURE recruitment. Presentation 3 showcases best practices used to prepare HURM college students for dental school and HURM dental school graduates for becoming faculty. The final presentation describes the importance of an institutions' cultural climate for the recruitment, retention and promotion of faculty from HURE backgrounds.

Learning Objectives:

Describe the past and current situation of the percentages of dental HURE faculty and administrators at U.S. institutions.
Discuss the progress in increasing the numbers of female dental students/faculty/administrators in U.S. dental students and identify strategies that could be applied for increasing numbers of HURE students/faculty/administrators.
Identify successful best practices for recrutiting college students from HURE backgrounds into dental school and HURE dental school graduates into faculty positions.
