Dr. Shirley is the Division Chief and Director of Dentistry at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Pediatric Hospital. He has been with Children's since 1997 and was in private practice in Atlanta from 2002 until 2019. Dr. Shirley is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine and a Consultant for the Navy Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, Maryland. He completed a residency program in pediatric dentistry at the University of Alabama-Birmingham. He received a master’s degree in health policy and economics from the London School of Economics and a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Chicago. Dr. Shirley is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Board of Special Care Dentistry. He is also a Fellow in Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
He currently serves on the Georgia Board of Dentistry and is a site visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Dr. Shirley is the past president of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and was Chair of the Oral Clinical Examination Subcommittee from 2011-2014. He served on the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s Board of Trustees, Council of Dental Care, Council of Dental Benefits, Committee on Special Healthcare Needs, and the American Dental Association’s Dental Quality Alliance Measurement Development Committee.
Dr. Shirley retired from the Navy Reserves after 32 years of service and held several clinical and senior executive medicine leadership positions in the Navy. He recently led efforts to create a pediatric dentistry residency program at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and that program accepted its first residents in 2022.
