When it comes to caries, we know who the players are; since dental school, we have learned that the usual suspects are bacteria such as S. mutans and S. sobrinus. But what are they doing? This session will explore the utility of metabolomics in revealing novel metabolites related to early childhood caries within Navajo infants. This session will present metabolic pathways that are highly active in caries-affected infants, and highlight novel metabolites that have potential to be future biomarkers for early childhood caries or points of intervention for caries prevention.
Learning Objectives:
Recognize how the metabolic activity of bacteria plays a role in the caries process.
Describe how metabolomics can help us further understand the caries process.
Discuss specific metabolic pathways and their association with caries.
