A Secondary Analysis Of Post Application Instructions For Fluoride Varnishes

Introduction: Fluoride varnish, a highly concentrated form of fluoride, is commonly applied semiannually by healthcare professionals and proven to reduce the risk of dental caries among children.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to review post application instructions for patients and parents across 5 different brands of Fluoride varnishes.

Methods: Information on ‘how to use’ was extracted from the manufacturer’s instructions pamphlets of 5 different Fluoride Varnish brands.

Results: All 5 Fluoride Varnish manufacturers had similar instructions apart from:
1. Voco Profluoride not discussing the avoidance of Hot foods or drinks postoperatively
2. Vanish White Varnish recommendation for patients to refrain from brushing or flossing their teeth for 24 hours to achieve the maximum benefit.
3. Enamelast recommendation to refrain from oral fluoride supplements for 4 days after treatment, MI Fluoride GC America stating several days after treatment, and all other brands recommending 2-3 days.

Conclusions: Dental Healthcare providers should properly read Fluoride Varnish manufacturer’s instructions if using different brands for patients / parents to receive the maximum benefits from the applied treatments.
