Purpose: The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate a prototype snap-a-ray system with integrated radiopaque marker to assess teeth measurements on bite wing radiographs obtained by PSP.
Methods: A prototype Snap-a-ray film holder with a metal insert of known length integrated in the bite plate was fabricated. Dentiform teeth with PEDS and Adults size of known mesio-distal measurements are compared with Bite Wing (BW) x-rays of the same teeth. Fifteen replicates were obtained for both adult and PEDS typodonts. Variances were analyzed between the control and the replicate radiographs. Statistical analysis was completed using Microsoft Excel and GraphPad Prism. Significance level was set at 0.05.
Results: The sample for primary teeth showed a statistically significant (P < 0.05) variance compared to control particularly with the first primary molars; however, no statistical significance was noted for #T (P >0.05). For permanent teeth, there were no statistically significant differences in the dentiform molars for #3,4,30 (P >0.05); however, a statistically significant difference was noted for #5,28,29 (P < 0.05). Overall, the means of all measured teeth on BW’s are within 10% of measured dentiform mesio-distal values, which was deemed acceptable for this pilot study.
Conclusion: A preliminary analysis shows that the prototype Snap-a-ray can be used as an acceptable tool to calibrate bite wing x-rays taken with a PSP. The results need to be validated using a larger sample size.
