Aim: Our objective is to show that the novel experimental 3 % Rennou (theobromine calcium and phosphate) varnish on remineralization of initial enamel caries lesion.
M&M: An experimental 3 % Rennou (theobromine, calcium and phosphate) (Theodent LLC, New Orleans, La., USA) varnish was used. 30 extracted human third molars were randomized into 3 groups: Group 1(G1): 5 %Sodium Fluoride (NaF) + 3 %Rennou, Group 2 (G2): 3% Rennou and Group 3 (G3): 5 % NaF. Demineralization and remineralization cycling were applied to all groups for 6 days. The Vickers hardness test determined surface microhardness under a load of 200 g for 15 seconds at the three separate times (before treatment, after demineralization, and after the corresponding treatments). Surface microhardness recovery (SMHR %) is calculated based on these 3 measurements. The collected data was analyzed using statistical software (SPSS) and the results were analyzed using ANOVA. Multiple comparisons between groups were performed using paired t-tests and post-hoc Tukey tests.
Results: SMHR% values of G1, G2 and G3 were 94,62±60,21, 68,65±26,99 and 57,53± 28,53, respectively. In pairwise comparisons of groups, SMHR % values show no difference (P>0.05).
Theobromine calcium and phosphate -based varnish was as effective as fluoride-varnish in remineralizing initial caries lesion.
Conclusion: Although all varnishes demonstrated some degree of effectiveness in treating artificial enamel lesions, Rennou containing novel varnish would be effective in remineralization with the advantageous features. Therefore, this novel varnish can be considered a useful preventive measure for pediatric dental patients.
