Purpose: This was a retrospective study to compare the clinical and radiographic success of Hall crowns vs conventional stainless-steel crowns on primary molars. A chart review was performed on the pediatric patients that presented to the dental clinic at Geisinger Health System.
Methods: Electronic health records (EHR) were reviewed for pediatric dental patients aged 2-11 years old, from 2019-2021.
Study participants included approximately 100 children who had stainless steel crowns placed on primary molars using the Hall technique in the clinic setting. The study participants were matched with children who received traditional stainless steel crowns during the same time period. Clinical success was measured as early as 6 months. Radiographic success was measured at 12 months and 24 months post placement or until the tooth naturally exfoliated. Failure was marked by a tooth becoming abscessed or showing a radiographic radiolucency
Results: Both Stainless Steel crowns and Hall Crowns exhibited >90% success over the 2 year period
Conclusions: Hall crowns are equally as successful as stainless steel crowns with proper case selection
