This quality improvement (QI) project aims to implement a protocol within The Department of Dentistry at Children's National Hospital to improve overall experience for patients diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during dental visits.

Upon CNH IRB approval, a video was created specifically for the CNH department of dentistry with the Autism Behavioral Communications (ABC) team demonstrating a model patient sitting for a routine exam and prophylaxis appointment. A program was implemented to make the video accessible to caregivers both in-person and online via CNH’s webpage prior to their dental visit. All English speaking patients from ages 3 to 20 identified to have mild ASD were presented the opportunity to partake in the project. 14 caregivers of children with mild ASD were provided an anonymous post-appointment surgery to assess the effectiveness of the video and caregiver satisfaction in the video. The surveys results were collected and the data was analyzed through Excel.

Preliminary results reveal an overall positive response. Out of 14 surveys, 71% of responses reported the video to be "Highly Beneficial", 29% found it to be "Beneficial", and 0% reported that the video was "Not Beneficial". 93% of caregivers reported they were "Highly Satisfied" with the video. 7% reported they were "Satisfied" and 0% reported they were "Dissatisfied" or "Highly Dissatisfied".

Overall, the video modeling resource has been shown to be effective in improving quality of care for patients with ASD and will continue to be implemented along with other resources such as PECS and a social story.
