Comparison of Stainless Steel Crown Success Rates: Conventional vs. Hall Technique, Tay L, Golikeri S, (Woodhull Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY)
Out of conventionally placed SSCs (p=4.215), 1 crown (0.328%) had a major failure, 8 crowns (2.623%) displayed minor failures, 296 crowns (97.05%) had no intervention necessary. Out of the 161 SSCs placed with the Hall Technique (p=1.987), 1 crown (0.621%) had a major failure, 5 crowns (3.106%) had minor failures, 155 (96.27%) had no intervention necessary.
Purpose: The purpose was to compare clinical and radiographic outcomes of conventional stainless steel crown with those placed using the Hall Technique
Methods: A retrospective chart review was completed of the children treated in the Pediatric Dental Department at Woodhull Medical Center. Success criteria is sorted into three categories: (1) Successful, (2) Minor failure, and (3) Major failure. A successful SSC does not require any intervention, with no clinical signs or symptoms of pulpal pathology. A minor failure constitutes SSC fracture or wear, reversible pulpitis without requiring pulpotomy or extraction. A major failure constitutes SSC with irreversible pulpitis or dental abscess requiring pulpotomy or extraction. The data covers a six-year period from October 2016 to September 2022.
Results: 468 stainless steel crowns were placed at Woodhull Medical Center Pediatric Dental clinic: 305 in the conventional stainless steel crown placement category [Age-Mean=6.85; Female=52%] and 161 [Age-Mean=5.20; Female=33%] in the Hall Technique placement category.
Conclusion: There is no statistically significant difference in success rates between placing stainless steel crowns conventionally and with the Hall Technique.
