Artificial intelligence (AI) is an emerging technology that enables processes of big clinical data and makes an enormous impact on medical decisions and life sciences. Orthodontics, by nature, has applied information analytics technology in practice such as cephalometry and model analysis since 1960s. Recent advancement in orthodontics has largely focused on the elevation of data analytics using AI approaches. This presentation will review current developments and point out future directions of AI orthodontics in both academic and industrial domains, including automated imaging analysis, cranio-skeletal characterization, tooth auto segmentation, patient outcome assessment, and AI-based diagnosis and treatment planning. In summary, AI presents opportunities for the next step of contemporary orthodontics.
