Dr. Sylvia Frazier-Bowers recently continued her career journey from the Tar Heel state at UNC-CH (via University of Illinois – Chicago: UIC) to her current position at Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) as a distinguished Professor of Orthodontics. Her academic career began after completing a combined orthodontics residency and genetic and molecular biology PhD at UNC-CH. Over the years, the crux of Dr. Frazier-Bowers’ translational research program inspires a paradigm shift in orthodontics from "how to move teeth--to how teeth move." Frazier-Bowers studies focus on the genetics of inherited tooth disorders and has also published widely on the genetic basis of eruption failure (specializing in PFE) Class III malocclusion and tooth agenesis. She maintains a strong link to the international craniofacial community in service and leadership with past roles as Director, Councilor, Vice-President and President in the IADR Craniofacial biology group, Chair of the AAO Council on Scientific Affairs, and Chair of the AAO-Practice Based Research Network (PBRN) Committee. Frazier-Bowers currently serves as the Vice-Chair of the AAOF Planning and Research Committee (PARC).
Dr. Frazier-Bowers balances her academic orthodontic portfolio with her new leadership role at IUSD as the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Chief Diversity Officer. In addition to serving as a distinguished professor in Orthodontics, Frazier-Bowers oversees IUSD leaders in Student Affairs including, Student Admissions, Student Services, Counseling, Financial Aid, and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.
