Mesialization of mandibular second molar in the extraction space of mandibular first molar is getting more common with every passing day. However, the safety of this approach has not been previously investigated. This presentation will answer the following questions: Does the mesialization of mandibular second molar in the extraction space of first molar results in significant alveolar bone loss (ABL)? Does the mesialization of mandibular second molar in the extraction space of mandibular first molar results in significant external apical root resorption (EARR)? What is the average duration of mesialization of mandibular second molar using temporary anchorage devices?
Learning Objectives:
After this lecture, attendees will be able to:
Demonstrate that the mesialization of mandibular second molar is a practical option in the first molar extraction cases.
Describe the risk of developing EARR and ABL in mesialized second molar as compared to the contralateral control.
Inform patients about the expected treatment duration of TAD supported lower 2nd molar mesialization in the fresh extraction site of 1st molar.
