Orthodontists apply craniofacial images for diagnosis (Dx) and treatment planning (Tx). The 2D images such as facial photos, intra-oral photos, panograms and cephalograms are gold standard information. Emerging 3D images such as CBCT and intra-oral scans have become routinely acquired for Dx/Tx. Current development of digital image processing for analysis of the craniofacial structures will be reviewed. Applications of these technologies in practice, research, and education will be presented. A call for standardization of craniofacial imaging shall be initiated in our professional community.
