This program will highlight the anesthetic complications that can occur when patients smoke or use edible marijuana prior to anesthesia treatment. The immediate pharmacological interactions between marijuana and anesthetics will be discussed. The effects of long-term marijuana use on anesthesia will also be reviewed. Cannabis effects on immediate implant surgical healing and long-term implant success will be examined.
Clinicians must evaluate and understand the short- and long-term effects of marijuana use on anesthesia and dental implant success. Algorithms will be provided on how to effectively manage patients who use marijuana on a routine or occasional basis.
