Dr Liu Hong’s lab has many years of research experience in stem cell biology and craniofacial tissue engineering for therapeutic purposes. Dr. Liu Hong was trained as a neurosurgeon in Shanghai, China before pursued a PhD in biomedical engineering and tissue engineering from Kyoto University. Dr Hong’s lab is currently focusing on translational research using microRNAs (miRs) to target oral and craniofacial diseases, including TMJ OA, periodontitis-associated bone loss, and oral and craniofacial bone defects. Based on the studies funded by the multiple NIH grants, they have observed that overexpression of miR-200c can effectively repress multiple proinflammatory cytokines and osteoclastogenic mediators. In addition, miR-200c overexpression can be effectively applied for osteogenic differentiation and bone regeneration. Dr. Hong is a Principal investigator on a number of NIH grant projects regarding miRs based gene therapy. Dr. Liu Hong is expert in the areas of miRs, bone tissue engineering, drug delivery system and gene therapy. In this study, Dr. Hong advise about research design and laboratory techniques. Dr. Hong also provided material and financial support for the pilot study.
