Dr. Swift is a tenured Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Minnesota where he was Director of the Division of OMS for more than 20 years and was Director of the Advanced Education in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for over 20 years as well. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and graduated cum laude from Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa. He completed his oral and maxillofacial surgery training program at the University of Oklahoma College of Medcine in 1985 and served on the faculty of OU for five years before taking the position of OMS program director at Minnesota. Dr. Swift has authored over 100 scientific articles, book chapters and abstracts. Dr. Swift served as an examiner for and as President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He also served as President of the American Dental Education Association. He was recipient of the Univeristy of Minnesota Century Club Professor of the Year in 2001. He was also given the Distinguished Service Award of the ADEA in 2009. He was also recipient of the ADEA William J Gies Foundation Annual Award in oral Surgery for Distinguished Acheivement in Oral Surgery in 2011. He was recipient of the Robert V. Walker Distinguished Service Award from the AAOMS in 2015. He was recipient of the 2013 Research Recognition Award by the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation in 2013. He was named the 2020 Guest of Honor of the Minnesota Dental Association in recognition of outstanding commitment of to the field of Organized Dentistry.
