Dr. Walton earned a DMD at the University of Oregon in 1965. After two years in the US Army, he trained at the University of Illinois to obtain a Certificate in Endodontics and an MS in Histology.
Since 1983, Dr. Walton was Professor of Endodontics at the University of Iowa and was Chair from 1983 –1996. Now he is retired and is Professor Emeritus. He has been an Examiner on the American Board of Endodontics.
He was Editor of the Endodontic Section of Triple O and has published numerous scientific and clinical articles and has contributed extensively to Ingle’s Endodontics as well as to Pathways of the Pulp. Dr. Walton co-authored a textbook, Endodontics: Principles and Practice.
In 1997, the Iowa Alumni Association recognized Dr. Walton as Educator of the Year and received the AAE Louis Grossman Award for research contributions in 2001. In 2004, an Iowa Endowed Professorship was established in his name. In 2004, Dr Walton was recognized by the President’s Club with the James McLeran Faculty Award. Dr Walton received the IB Bender Lifetime Educator Award at the AAE meeting in 2012.
The University of Iowa Endodontics Clinic now carries his name.
