SP-1 - A New Direction in Managing Avulsed Teeth: De novo PDL Regeneration

Managing avulsed teeth is challenging for clinicians, often leading to replacement resorption and unfavorable outcomes. The primary reason is the damage to periodontal ligament cells, and bone cells often invade the root surface rather than slow-moving periodontal ligament (PDL) cells. This leads to ankylosis, and currently, no treatment is available to prevent it.

This presentation will i) discuss the limitations of current management protocols for avulsed teeth; ii) overview recent research on cell-based therapy for PDL regeneration in small, large animal models and clinical trials; and iii) identify the challenges of de novo regeneration of PDL on denuded root using a mini-swine model. This session will provide an understanding of the future direction to establish a new clinical protocol to manage avulsed teeth based on the current progress of cell-based PDL regeneration.
